| Description Of Site
Highland General Hospital is a publicly owned and operated
medical center that serves a wide variety of populations within
the City of Oakland. Due to factors such as the site location
in the city and providing health care to felons, Highland
General Hospital requires a unique blend of security, safety,
and human factors engineering in order to fulfill its mission
in the community.
The Highland General Hospital campus consists of fourteen
buildings, including an acute care hospital, emergency room,
clinic, and felon ward that serves Alameda County.

Security By Design
Involvement
Completed a preliminary security and safety survey, and submitted
a report to Alameda County.
Of Special Interest
Significant security and safety improvements have been accomplished
as a result of the initial report. All of these improvements
were inexpensive, non-system, building and landscaping maintenance
items.
Because of the age and layout of the buildings, communications
paths are a challenge. Distances are long enough to require
fiber optics as the major medium for communications. Fitting
modern access control devices into old architecture is a serious
challenge, as well.
