| Description Of Site
The NUMMI facility is an automobile and light truck assembly plant owned and operated by both Toyota
Motor Co. and General Motors. The plant is situated on 90 acres with over 4 million square feet of
covered space and employs 5000 team members.
This project entailed the upgrade of the security system in the NUMMI facility. The objective of the
security system was to prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining access to the facility and to provide
team member entry and exit information to the Human Resources department.
Security By Design Involvement
The upgrade was broken into two phases to enable NUMMI personnel access to the plant and not disrupt
productivity while the upgrade/construction was in progress.
The first phase was comprised of SBD providing the specifications, details, and drawings for a new
administration entrance and reconfiguration of a portion of the existing Central Security Control room.
The reconfiguration allowed for the installation of new equipment associated with the Access Control System,
Badging and Photo Imaging System, CCTV, Fiber Optic, Security LAN, and Interface File Server head-end
systems. The Security LAN required the installation of a 10BaseT network, replacing the thin-coax Ethernet LAN.

The second phase consisted of SBD providing the specifications, details, and drawings for a remodeled
main employee entrance with four access controlled turnstiles. Also included were the specifications for
a new Badging building and an arch-type magnetometer (metal detector) to be installed in the lobby entrance
to Administration Building.
Other services provided by SBD included the assistance in obtaining a source to create photo images of approximately
5000 team members, to produce 5000 badges, and to populate a new database with the 5000 team members' information.
Of Special Interest
Special software was procured which allowed Human Resources to provide automatic team member updates and status
changes to the security system while allowing the Security database to provide "in/out" transactional data to Time
and Labor for payroll audit and production line purposes.
