SBD has worked with UC
Berkeley on several projects. The Doe/Moffitt Libraries
project connected an existing seven-story library with an existing
five-story library via a new two-story subterranean library
stacks section. The security work included criteria for CPTED
(Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) issues as well
as control versus life safety design work.
The systems were tied into the campus systems to the University
Police. The campus was undergoing some changes in system technology
during this design period, and SBD helped to finalize several
open issues of large-scale implementation.
Security By Design designed a building security system that
included access control, alarm monitoring and CCTV. SBD prepared
biddable specifications and provided support to ensure that
the installed system met the requirements specified in the
contract documents.
SBD engineered the security system to interface with the
book tagging system providing an audit trail for the libraries.
This approach was new and unique to the system.
SBD also worked with
the libraries at UC Berkeley in its Rare Books Library. The
Rare Books Library included one large collection in the Doe
Library building and five other sites on campus. Each was surveyed
and systems designed to fit the unique character and needs of
the collections. Special care was taken with the design so that
the systems would not cause deterioration of the old manuscripts
and books and other rare artifacts.
